WHEN: April 22 to 30, 2011 - On Friday, April 22 fly to the BVIs to stay in a hotel the night beofre we set sail.  Then on Saturday, April 23 attend a chart briefing followed by the boat checkout to set sail at 1400.  We'll return to our Mooring Base in Road Town, Tortola around 1100 hours on Saturday, April 30 for an early afternoon flight back to the "good old" U.S.A.

The airport code for Beef Island, British Virgin Island is EIS. You can also fly to St. Thomas, USVI, airport code SPB, but you will have to take a 1 to 2 hour ferry ride to reach the Moorings Base in RoadTown. You can call Moorings Travel at 800.535.7289 to get good airfare prices. Travel miles are available but are usually gone inside of six months of the trip.

COST: The trip will cost $2,000 for your own private berth plus $300 if you bring a companion. The charter fee covers: ASA 104 or ASA 106 certification, boat charter, hull damage insurance, charts, cruising fees, fuel surcharge, trip insurance, six breakfasts, five lunches, two dinners cooked on board, water, ice, cold drinks, mooring fees, docking at the Bitter End Yacht Club, cook, and USCG ASA Instructional Captain.

THE BOAT: We will be chartering the new Moorings 51.5 monohull with four berths and captain's quarter. The Boat's name is "Joie de Vivre" which is French for "enjoy life". Designed by Berret-Racoupeau and built by Beneteau, the Moorings 51.5 is the latest addition to the Moorings fleet. "Joie de Vivre" features a large cockpit, generous interior volumes, 4 double cabins with en-suite heads and shower, plus crew quarters with a head and sink in the peak. The large galley is across a U-shaped saloon shower, plus crew quarters with a head and sink in the peak. The large galley is across a U-shaped saloon with a large table that also converts to a double bed.  The boat has two wheels to steer, roller furling, windless, dinghy, air conditioner, barbecue grill, bimini, GPS, chart plotter, and autopilot.

WHAT TO PACK: Almost everyone packs too much, and that is a pain at the airport, a pain in the taxi, a pain on the ferry, and a pain hauling gear to the cottage, room, boat, etc. The islands are informal everywhere. You don't need very much here. All you need in the islands is a bathing suit (maybe 2), 3 pairs of shorts, 3 T-shirts, 1 pair long cotton pants, underwear, one windbreaker or light rain jacket and a cover-up for the sun. Wear tennis/boat shoes and bring sandals for the feet. Bring a set of sweats or a light sweater. Divers might bring their own mask and regulator, but it's easier to rent everything else. Bring what you need for contacts, medicine, suntan (15+), and bug repellent. Bring a long sleeve shirt or sweater.  No hard-sided luggage, we do not have the storage room.  Pack any prescription drugs in their original bottles.
Sea Sickness.

WHAT OTHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT THE "SKIPPERS in TRAINING" CLASS?

“Harry knows his craft and definitely knows the BVI's.  Although he will at times frustrate the beginner, it is only because he wants the student to understand both the pleasure and challenge of coastal sailing.  This is no amusement park, it is real, and Harry has a way of imparting that reality.  I would not hesitate to sail with Harry."  - Ralph Tucker

“Harry’s curriculum was both fun and rigorous providing me with the skills, knowledge and confidence to sail the islands.” - John Saxon

“If you dream of bareboat chartering in exotic locations around the world, you need hands-on comprehensive instructions.  Harry Polly's curriculum was both fun and rigorous provided me the skills and knowledge to realize my dreams.”   - Richard Burnes

“I would like to take this opportunity to express my heart felt appreciation to you for such a job well done in organizing our Flotilla and Training Trip to the BVI’s in November.  Everything was perfect and came off as planned.  In fact it was the very best vacation I have had to date and plan on adding to the wonderful excursion by booking more trips with you in the near future.  Not only were the boats top of the line, but our sails to the islands, restaurants and bars where second to none.  But all of that was secondary to the abundant real world knowledge and experience I learned from your classes and diligent “hands on” teaching”. - Allan Sanders

"While billed as the trip of a lifetime, this fantastic trip exceeded every expectation. It was a great mix of learning, beautiful scenery, great people, and just plain fun." - Ben Albritton
